In today’s society the focus on being small isn’t just reinforced through magazines and social media. Any time you walk into a mall or store, mannequins with lithe limbs and impossible thigh gaps will gawk at you.

Daring you to dig through the pile of jeans labelled size two and hope that somewhere near the bottom there will be one in your size left.

Hip bones jut out from underneath the clothing and models hanging on the wall look stunningly thin in the clothes that in more than all likeness, will not be left in your size. Because lets face it, the mediums and larges are the first to go. But it is important to remember that everyone has their flaws, yet is beautiful in their own way. So I decided to piece together the real and the idealized commercial standards for women in consumer culture.

A mannequin so thin her hipbones pop underneath her dress.
I don’t know about you, but I think the one with the curves on the right pulls the look together better.
Real always looks best
The last time I saw a thigh gap like this was in elementary school… on a fourth grader.
Lets play a game, if the hand is bigger than the mannequins waist, society sucks… Oh wait…
I spy with my little eye… a very small selection of sizes.
“Look a size smaller, feel amazing”. Just the pep talk everybody needs.
I’m pretty certain one of the mannequins legs can fit in my sister’s clutch.
Holy Moly, look out for the hottie in the green shirt!
“Does this pose make it look like our store sells anything larger than a size 6? God I hope not…”

“XOXO, you know you love us, but will likely never be us”- The one percent of women in the world that fit societies ideal vision of ‘perfect’.

Cheers,
